The Government have announced an extension to the transport subsidies, This involves half price public transport until January 31, and permanently for Community Service Card holders from February 1. We have more info here to explain how this works.
Transport Minister Michael Wood said since half price fares were introduced on April 1, public transport use has increased in the three largest centres, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
“We know this makes a real difference for people feeling cost of living pressures, particularly lower income households. Because half price public transport will now be available for all New Zealanders until the end of January, the Community Connect scheme will now start on February 1 next year.
Total Mobility Scheme – The Total Mobility Scheme provides discounted travel for people who are unable to use public transport easily. This scheme is funded by the government and local councils, and provides subsidised door to door transport services.
The Total Mobility scheme operates throughout New Zealand and allows arrangements with other local authorities to receive discounted travel in their region.
For more info, see the Government website for the full details, and ask your local driver how these subsidies could affect your fare. There is also more info available from the government about the Total Mobility Scheme. Different regions have different discounts applicable as this is set by the regional council.
