Recently our driver Dean from Christchurch shared a very special moment with his client Mitch.
Mitch’s wife, Christine, shares some lovely feedback:
“Dean, thank you so much for letting me know how Mitch’s journey was with you today. It is certainly a journey for us all.
It is just so nice and special to hear his voice again and communicate with us all.
I love to hear what he was talking to you in the van about, thank you for thinking of recording it. It is about memories and special times and we want to keep hold of them.
Dean, you are doing a great job and I feel so comfortable Mitch is in good hands with you on the roads. Thank you for your support on this journey Mitch and I are on”
Dean says;
“6 years ago, Mitch was knocked off his push bike by a 92 year old lady driving a car. The end result was that the doctors said he would never walk and never talk again. Mitch lives at St John of God, a Brain Injury Trust in Halswall. Mitch is in a wheelchair.
ACC provide funding for Mitch to be transported from the Trust to his wife’s home in Marshland. I transport Mitch once a fortnight.
Just before Christmas, Mitch started saying words. They were clearly audible. I was amazed as this was a real milestone not predicted. It happened all of a sudden. I told his wife, who said YES, his music teacher said the same. Mitch was a lover of music, and still is, and had many albums and a turntable.
On the way home Mitch started talking and I decided to record the trip on video using my phone and sent it to his wife. She was amazed.
Now when I pick Mitch up I have an 80’s Radio Station playing and Mitch will often repeat some song lines or the name of the song. He knows them all!
I always look forward to picking Mitch up every second Thursday, and he enjoys the ride with me. I am grateful that I am able to share the journey and bond with such special people”.
